A Meaningful Dinner Under the August Sturgeon Moon

An Evening of Connection, Creativity and Intention

On a Friday evening under the August Sturgeon Moon, ten women gathered around a table in Macomb, Michigan for really good food, meaningful conversation and a chance to simply be present with one another.

The Meaningful Dinner was created by my friends Lauryn and Jenn, bringing together Jenn’s love of food and Lauryn’s gift for creating intentional spaces and conversations.

I was lucky enough to come alongside them as a creative collaborator, helping bring some of the visual details of the evening to life and then stepping behind the scenes to help everything come together.

The Idea Behind the Meaningful Dinner

The intention for the evening was beautifully simple: gather around a table, share an incredible meal and make space for the kind of conversation we don’t always slow down enough to have.

And over the course of the evening, that’s exactly what unfolded.

Between courses, stories were shared, questions led to unexpected conversations and the table became a place to linger a little longer. There was laughter, reflection and plenty of really good food all without anywhere else we needed to be.

It was the kind of evening that reminded you how special it can be to simply sit around a table together.

Bringing the Details to Life

My part of the collaboration started before anyone ever sat down at the table.

I created the paper goods for the evening, including custom menus, place cards and individual channeled message cards for each guest.

I love details like these because they can take something from simply looking beautiful to actually feeling personal.

The place cards gave everyone a seat at the table.

The menus became another layer of the overall visual experience.

And the channeled messages gave each woman something specifically intended for her a little piece of the evening she could take home.

Individually, they're small details. Together, they helped tell the story of the dinner.

Behind the Scenes

Once the dinner began, I traded designing for helping behind the scenes.

I spent much of the evening back of house with Jenn helping plate food, keeping things moving, adjusting details and jumping in wherever an extra set of hands was needed.

It felt like coming home to myself in a way.

For more than a decade, events were a huge part of my work. Eventually, I reached a point where I needed to step away from that world completely.

But this felt different.

There were no endless rounds of approvals or overthinking every creative decision. Everyone brought their own strengths, trusted each other and worked toward the same vision.

I got to create something beautiful, help some of my favorite people and watch an idea become an actual experience. Somewhere between tweaking the table, plating food and watching everyone settle into conversation, I felt a little bit of that old spark come back.

More Evenings Like This

The Meaningful Dinner reminded me why I fell in love with creating experiences in the first place. It's not necessarily the event itself. It's the feeling you're creating for someone.

It's thinking about what they'll see when they walk in, what they'll find waiting at their seat, how they'll move through the evening and what they might carry with them when they leave.

And while I don't see myself returning to traditional event planning, I would love to call in more creative partnerships and collaborations like this throughout Metro Detroit and Southeast Michigan.

Beautiful experiences. Thoughtful details. Cool ideas that need another creative brain or an extra set of hands to bring them to life.

Whether that looks like creative direction, custom paper goods, design, production support or something we haven't thought of yet, I would happily make more room for it.
